Why is it called the Ravine of the Lovers or Enchanted?

In reality, the name Ravine of the Lovers or Enchanted originates from an atmospheric phenomenon that the ancient inhabitants of the island, known as the Mahos, called Bayuyo, a name also related to the Bayuyo Volcanoes on the same island. But what is this phenomenon that gave them their name?
During the period near the summer solstice, banks of fog form in the vicinity. The Mahos believed that these clouds represented the “Enchanted”, ancestral spirits present in the local culture. In 2008, this place was declared a Cultural Heritage Site, recognized as a paleontological area. Important discoveries have been made here, including the first finding of a species of terrestrial gastropod of the genre cochlicella, as well as other remains revealing its particular geological history.
How was the Barranco de los Enamorados formed?

Natural phenomena, such as rainfall during wet periods and the erosive action of winds, have eroded the slopes of the gorge, allowing for the formation of deposits in the lower areas.
Furthermore, the humid climate of the island of Fuerteventura, combined with the constant breeze, has favored the growth of a very particular vegetation, as well as terrestrial mollusks. This has led the Barranco de los Enamorados to become a filling of dunes and paleosols, where fossil remains can be found that bear witness to the natural history of the Canary island.

The track from El Cotillo starts at Esquinzo beach, while another option is to depart from the village of Tindaya or the picturesque town of Los Lajares. It is recommended to visit any of these places before or after exploring the Barranco de los Enamorados.
